A great fishing trip today. Learnt a lot from two fishermen today and also caught and release a nice big catfish.
Few things I learnt from fellow abangs:
1. This marine catfish with body strips is not tasty, the tasty one has no body strips.
2. Good time for crabbing is when the current is slow.
3. The canel near East Park Carpark G is a good fishing spot
4. Can try the beach in front of Pasir Ris Park Carpark A
5. Go to Punggol beach during low tide, so as to surf cast. There are mangrove jacks to be caught
6. Live bait are the best if want to catch tasty fishes such as Barramundi
Field tested the new plastic crab traps I bought from Shopee and I am not really happy with the results. The plastic is not robust enough to withstand rough handling. By the end of the trip, both of the traps have cracks on their body. Probably can use the traps one more time before throwing them away as it is not possible to repair the structural damage.

Really slow day today. Nothing in the crab cage even though I set them up and left them in the water for 4 hours since 6.30am. That is about four solid hours with fish head + salted fish and belachen as bait. Could it be due to the fabled new moon that made the crabs molted and go into hiding until their shell harden. Going to try the same spot next week to test the hypothesis.

Nothing
Return home empty handed is sad, but today it got worse. Not a single bite at all from the fishing line and the crab traps turn out empty.
Strike up a conversation with an old angler as I was packing up. He has been fishing around this area since he was a child. He explained the boats go up and down the straits and the oil they spilled has polluted the bottom, thus nothing live on the bottom of the water. He advice I should get some live bait and use float rigs if I want to get some fishes here. Another advice he gave was fish don't bite after raining. Going to keep those in mind and start trying float rigs.

Tried catching sandworms today with little success. The worms are slippery and not easily to grab a hold of them. My prawn head baits are not smelly enough and the waves are distracting me big time. In the end I only managed to catch 2 small worms. Luckily Mr Lee appeared today at around 2pm, so I bought a container of worms from him. Did not managed to get any big fish though, maybe due to the afternoon thunderstorm.
Fished out a Flower Crab using a fishing rig. The hook was caught in between the poor fellow's leg. Lucky it is a small crab, or else it will end up on the dinner table.

Back to fishing on the south of Singapore as there was an oil spill at Changi area on 04-04-2025. No fishing at Changi area and Pasir Ris area for the next 6 months. The fishes I brought home are for my kid, so not going catch fishes which feed in a diet rich in petroleum.
Today's trip is terrible. Not only there are little bites, a group of 5 anglers gate crash at around 1pm by setting up camp at the same spot as me. Been crowded out I have no choice, but to move to the adjacent beach.

Returned empty handed once more. The fish here seem to have no interest in prawns, as other anglers using them also went home empty-handed. The bites began to come only after I purchased a box of sandworms from another fisherman who had been collecting them at the beach. I managed to catch a decent-sized marine catfish after switching to the worms, but by that time, the tide had dropped to nearly its lowest point, leaving a flat expanse of 100 meters.
I might reach out to him again to purchase another box of worms to test it out next week. Fingers crossed that I'll catch some good fish to bring home.

The day has come when a female flower crab with full of eggs in its abdomen got snagged by the bait cast crab net. Got to release it, so there are crabs to catch in the future.
Today I learnt sea snails are one of the critters are eating my baits. Hopefully this one live to a ripe of age as I had can only cut the line and throw it back into the water as the hook is stuck deep in the snail.
Got to pack up as the thunderstorm started over my head. However in the end I still got caught in the heavy rain as I struggled to untangle one of my fishing line.

First time trying this grey site. I guess it is alright to fish here as there is no sign prohibiting it. I am not the first one to realized this god forsaken place is a fishing spot as there were fishing hooks and lines littered around to area. There are even a few rental bikes parked here too, which I promptly leaned my rods against as I assemble them.
Lost four rigs during this trip. 3 due to the lines getting stuck in the trees or on the fences. Guess I really have to work on my casting accuracy and have the line fly in the direction I wanted it to. The 4th rig had the worst fate. The moray eel which I hooked up just coiled around and dispense slime on the line and rod tip. Had to cut the line to get it untangled before releasing it back into the water. Washed the rod with fresh water to remove the slime before continue fishing and also gave it a good scrub after the fishing trip.
Muddy bottom, means mud crabs. Got one around the same size from the market. Another smaller one managed to escape and dropped into the drain. These buggers are sure aggressive. The moment I got close the menacing claws are immediately pointed at me. Good thing I used fish pliers to grab the second one. Can't imagine how painful it will be if the claw managed to snap one of my limbs.

First time doing full night fishing. Visibility wasn't much of an issue as there are street lamps and I also brought a hand held lamp and headlamp. Maybe the headlamp battery is whacked due to age as it went flat after about 2 hours into the fishing session.
Was talking to a passer-by as I was setting up the traps. He came all the way from Hougang to see the waves. Chatted a while with him about fishing and current affairs before we parted ways to do our respective activities.
Catch wise, not much luck in getting any big fish, the baits constantly getting eaten by mooncrabs. Managed to get some strikes using Sabiki rig, but they are all small fishes. Took one of the Spangled Emperor I caught home as the hook is deep in its throat. Doubt it will survive even if I managed to get the hook out, so it is going to the dinner table.
Made some improvement to the crab nets for this trip. The baits are now places in nylon bag or steel cage. This prevent the prawn baits from being eaten by the hermit crabs, but sadly not sizeable flower crabs or fishes were caught in the trap.

03.15pm - 1 Spotted Sicklefish using Mortician's Rig
03.30pm - 1 Flower Crab using Crab Net
First time going to Labrador jetty to fish. I made a big mistake of parking the car at Carpark A although it seems the closest to the jetty. In reality, it was the farthest away as I needed to go down the hill and looped around at the bottom of the hill beside Carpark C before I could reach the jetty. Took about 30mins before I reached the jetty.
The jetty was crowded by the time I reached it. With the right side of the jetty fully occupied, I decided to set up on the left side. Have to use overhead cast as there is not enough space to do off the ground cast.
The catch rate for bottom rig and traps is very low, over the span of 7 hours, using 3 rods and 3 crab nets coupled with about 15 salted prawns and 2 bags of dried sandworms, I only got 4 fishes and 1 crab. The area is infested with todak (needlefish), so maybe I will come back to try surface fishing next time
Got some comfort as I was leaving. One of the regulars I chatted with told me my catch rate is expected. He explained the catch in this area is unpredictable as some times there are strikes and some times anglers go home empty handed.
